The final word on the Russia tour
It’s official: Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, will not be performing at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg. After weeks of uncertainty and confusing signals regarding the October 10 and 11 dates, the Moscow-based Say Agency confirmed the cancellation with "sincere regret" in a post on Telegram.
The venue drama
This whole situation has been a total mess from the start. Back in August, the Gazprom Arena claimed they never actually signed a rental agreement with the promoters, even as Say Agency insisted they were trying to fix the issue. The stadium also admitted they’d been hit with complaints about the rapper’s history of offensive remarks.
Why it went sideways
It’s giving major tension. The planned shows were set to be the biggest performances by a Western artist since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. However, they faced heavy backlash from Russian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who called the shows "unacceptable" and pointed out his history of antisemitic comments and past "glorification" of Hitler. Even pro-war bloggers in the country were side-eyeing the idea of hosting an American artist while the US supports Ukraine.
Ye has recently attempted to walk back his past behavior, blaming his bipolar disorder for his previous "antisemitic and pro-Nazi" comments, claiming he had "lost touch with reality." Despite this, he continues to face hurdles on the global stage. Last year, he was barred from entering the UK, which forced the cancellation of the Wireless Festival.
Why it matters
This marks a significant L for Ye’s international touring comeback, which has otherwise seen him hitting stages in the US, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The cancellation highlights how the rapper’s past controversies continue to follow him, turning what could have been a massive stadium run into a logistical and reputation nightmare.
