The news
Writer Suleika Jaouad, who is married to Grammy-winning artist Jon Batiste, shared a deeply personal update this week regarding her ongoing battle with leukemia. In an Instagram post dated September 28, the 38-year-old revealed she has checked back into the hospital to undergo her third bone marrow transplant.
Jaouad, who was first diagnosed back in 2010, explained that the treatments currently keeping her cancer in check aren't hitting the mark like they used to. She candidly admitted, "I've known another bone marrow transplant might be in my future. I was hoping the future was in less of a hurry." It’s a lot, and frankly, we’re sending her all the good vibes right now.
Staying strong
Despite the heavy news, Jaouad remains remarkably resilient. While she admitted she is "scared," she emphasized that she has a solid support system in her corner. Along with her brilliant medical team and Jon, she’s got her family, supportive friends, and a whole squad of animals—including four dogs, two peacocks, and fourteen chickens—keeping things grounded.
Reflecting on her journey, the Between Two Kingdoms author noted that she’s already outlived many medical expectations by leaning into treatments that didn't even exist when she started this fight. She’s currently waiting for the science to catch up, stating, "I have a plan, and I have a great deal of hope." She also noted that focusing on her creative work helps her make her world feel "big again" even when illness tries to shrink it down.
Her husband, Jon Batiste, has been a pillar throughout their marriage. Back in March 2025, he told E! News that he is fully committed to navigating the ups and downs of their life together, saying, "I support her in that."
Why it matters
Suleika Jaouad’s transparency is highkey inspiring. By sharing the reality of living with chronic illness, she’s showing us that even when the plot thickens and things get scary, maintaining hope and staying creative can be a total lifeline. She’s really out here proving that main character energy isn't just about the highs—it’s about how you handle the lows, too.
