Real talk, Joe Manganiello has been through the absolute wringer. In a vulnerable new interview, the 49-year-old actor opened up about a mysterious, undiagnosed autoimmune condition that hijacked his life for seven long years. The vibes were undeniably off starting in 2015, right after his marriage to Sofía Vergara, when he began suffering from brutal digestive ulcers, fevers, rashes, and soul-crushing fatigue.
A long road to healing
It wasn't just a physical struggle; it was a total mental health nightmare. Manganiello shared that at his lowest, he even had to give away his gun because the suicidal ideation was so heavy. He lost 60 pounds, dealt with multiple colonoscopies, and underwent emergency surgery in 2016 to remove part of his intestines, which required him to use a colostomy bag for a time. To manage the chronic, unexplained pain, he relied on various medications, including hydrocodone and fentanyl patches, which he admitted made him feel like he couldn't claim his sobriety.
Things started to shift when he adopted a sickly chihuahua named Bubbles, which helped him pivot from being the patient to the caretaker. Eventually, he sought help from a Santa Monica shaman, and he credits that experience with helping him move past ancestral trauma and letting go of his constant fear of death. Now, he’s in a much better place, feeling like the world has finally opened back up to him, and he’s embracing his future with Caitlin. It’s giving major main character energy to come out the other side of something so harrowing.
Why it matters
Joe’s story is a raw reminder that even the people we see on the big screen can be struggling with invisible, debilitating health battles that they don't talk about until they're ready. His journey highlights the importance of mental health support and finding new ways to heal when traditional medicine doesn't have all the answers.
