Staying offline

It’s giving main character energy—but for real. Mikey Madison, the star of the upcoming film The Social Reckoning, is officially a total ghost on the internet. In a recent chat with E! News, the 27-year-old revealed that her choice to stay off social media wasn’t some trendy detox; it’s a lifestyle choice she made way back in the day.

"It was just a personal choice I made a really long time ago," Madison shared at the film’s New York City premiere. "I've never really been on social media."

Method acting or just vibes?

Maybe the lack of screen time actually helped her channel her character. In the movie, Madison plays real-life whistleblower Frances Haugen, who famously exposed the "Facebook Files" in 2021. Madison clearly has a lot of respect for the role, calling Haugen an "incredible woman" and admitting she’s not sure she’s as brave as the real-life icon. "I think that's something really incredible to strive towards," she added.

Co-star check-in

Madison isn't the only one in the cast—which also features Jeremy Strong, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr—feeling skeptical about the digital world. Jeremy Allen White, who stars alongside Madison, is lowkey worried about how social media affects the younger generation.

As a parent, White is team "keep kids unplugged." He told E! News, "Kids need to keep their worlds as small as possible for as long as possible." He added that growing up is hard enough without having to compare yourself to literally everyone else on the planet 24/7.

Why it matters

With The Social Reckoning hitting theaters on October 9, the cast's real-life stance on Big Tech adds an extra layer to the film's message. In a world where everyone is chronically online, seeing stars advocate for an offline life is a vibe shift that definitely hits different.
