A Lesson in Color Theory

Real talk: we have all been there. You have a vision, you commit to the aesthetic, and then you realize you completely botched a basic detail. For Sam Smith, that detail was the literal name of their fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes.

While hanging out with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Smith dropped the tea on their creative process. The album is all about love, warmth, and being in a happy place, but the title was a massive, accidental blunder. Smith admitted, "I thought hazel eyes were brown, like hazelnut."

Spoiler alert: they aren't. Hazel eyes are actually a mix of green, gold, and amber. Smith realized the mistake four months into the campaign when everything was already locked in. The worst part? The aesthetic was already set. "All my clothes were brown for the whole album campaign. It’s a nightmare," Smith shared, laughing about the unintentional color coordination.

Shifting the Vibe

After their 2023 album Gloria—which was honestly such an intense, vulnerable moment—this new era is a total pivot. Smith wanted to lean into real instruments and "singing from my heart and my soul" while being surrounded by friends.

Writing from a place of genuine happiness and stability has been a new experience for the artist, who was worried they wouldn't be able to reach deep emotional layers without the heartbreak of the past. Turns out, being safe at home makes it way easier to tap into those feelings. They’re keeping the intimacy going too, opting for a global residency tour in smaller, iconic venues like Brooklyn's Warsaw and the Castro Theatre in San Francisco rather than massive arenas.

Why it matters

Even global superstars with five Grammys and 57 billion streams can have a "main character" moment where they get the facts wrong. It’s a hilarious reminder that sometimes you just have to lean into the chaos—as Smith said, they’re just going to "change the definition" of what the title means now.
