The struggle is real

If you were holding your breath for Zhang Yimou’s big-screen take on the legendary sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem, you might need to take a seat. The director just dropped an update at the Busan International Film Festival, and it's giving "perfectionist energy." Despite the project being in the works for several years, Zhang confirmed that he and his team are still grinding away at the script.

"It is very difficult to adapt," Zhang admitted while chatting with festival director Jung Hanseok. He’s lowkey feeling the pressure, noting that he’s not just trying to make a movie—he’s trying to make one that doesn't disappoint the massive, hype-filled fanbase.

High expectations in the AI era

When word first leaked that the acclaimed director was attached to the project, the internet absolutely popped off. Zhang’s team actually compiled around 400,000 fan comments in just one week to gauge the vibe.

He noted that in our current age of AI and democratized visuals, audiences have high-key become way more discerning. "We all feel tremendous pressure," he said, promising to pay close attention to what fans actually want to see.

Liu Cixin’s iconic story, which is the first of the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, has already been adapted by Tencent, Netflix, and Bilibili, so Zhang definitely has some big shoes to fill. As for when we'll actually see it? It sounds like he’s playing the long game, saying that making a truly great film is a mix of effort and a little bit of luck.

Why it matters

With The Three-Body Problem already having multiple high-profile adaptations, Zhang Yimou is essentially going up against existing versions that fans are already deeply invested in. His commitment to "polishing" the script signifies he's prioritizing quality over a quick cash grab, which is a major W for sci-fi fans who want to see this epic story done right.
