A Close Call for the Bates Patriarch
Real talk: health scares are never the vibe, and it’s been a heavy few days for the Bates family. Gil Bates, the patriarch of the famous Bringing Up Bates clan, is currently recovering after being hospitalized for a heart attack on September 28.
His wife, Kelly Jo Bates, kept it real with followers on Instagram, explaining that Gil had been feeling 'off' for about two weeks. He was experiencing some weird chest sensations and jaw pain, but because he was busy working at Bates Tree Service, he lowkey brushed it off. Eventually, he headed to the ER thinking it would be a quick blood work check, but things escalated fast.
The Diagnosis
It turns out, the situation was serious. Doctors told Gil he was having a heart attack and rushed him onto nitro and heparin to keep him stable. A cardiac catheterization revealed some scary news: he had an 80 percent blockage in his LAD artery and a massive 95 percent blockage in his RAD artery.
Kelly Jo shared that doctors described her husband as a 'ticking time bomb' who was dangerously close to a major cardiac event. Thankfully, the medical team caught it in time to perform the necessary corrections.
What’s Next
Gil is already heading home, which is nothing short of a miracle. Moving forward, he’s going to be starting cardiac therapy and making some necessary changes to his diet and medications to get his health back on track.
Why it matters
This is a major reminder to listen to your body—if something feels wrong, don't wait for it to pass. The Bates family is currently leaning on their faith and community support, and for fans, it’s a relief to see Gil on the mend after such a terrifying plot twist.
