A safer stage

Real talk: the toxic culture in the creative industry is finally being put on notice. The Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (CIISA) just launched an official whistleblowing portal for workers in the U.K. film, TV, music, and theater sectors to call out harassment, abuse, and discrimination.

Following a soft launch back in June, the portal is now officially recognized in Parliament. As of October 1, the system had already processed about 30 reports, and they’re expecting that number to climb fast. The goal here isn't just to catch one person, but to get a "clearer picture" of the patterns of bad behavior that have plagued sets and stages for way too long.

Why it matters

This is a massive W for safety. For years, the industry’s reliance on freelance work and huge power imbalances let predators hide in plain sight. Philippa Childs, head of the entertainment union Bectu, noted that the industry was basically a playground for bullies, but this new platform gives workers a protected, anonymous way to blow the whistle.

This launch hits at a crucial time, especially with the U.K. legal system currently dealing with high-profile abuse allegations against Russell Brand. Culture secretary Lisa Nandy made it clear that "safety at work is non-negotiable." While the portal is currently focused on mapping out widespread issues rather than litigating individual cases, it’s a massive step toward making sure the people who power the arts aren't getting burned. It's giving accountability, and honestly? It's about time.
