The real story behind the split
If you thought the drama between Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara was all about family planning, think again. The actor is setting the record straight in his new memoir, Bloodlines, released today. While Vergara previously hinted that their divorce was largely because he wanted kids and she didn't, Manganiello is calling that narrative a major L.
Real talk: the actual catalyst was a terrifying, years-long health crisis. Manganiello details a brutal battle with an autoimmune disease that caused severe digestive issues, leading to 60 pounds of weight loss and multiple surgeries, including the emergency removal of his large intestine in 2016.
More than just growing apart
It’s giving major emotional distance. Manganiello writes that as his health deteriorated, the dynamic shifted from romantic partners to patient and caregiver. He recalls a moment when he was excited about a potential role in a Batman movie, only for Vergara to react with fear, assuming the worst. He describes her as being deeply traumatized by the constant threat of his “impending abandonment via death.”
Things eventually reached a breaking point. Manganiello claims the marriage became “devoid of any emotionality,” alleging that they started sleeping in separate rooms and that Vergara wouldn't even offer him a hug. He notes that during those dark days, his main emotional support was actually his dog, Bubbles.
The aftermath
When he finally started to recover, Manganiello says he tried to revisit the idea of having kids, but alleges that Vergara’s response was to roll her eyes and walk out of the room. He says he hasn’t spoken to her since moving out. Following their 2023 divorce filing, Manganiello moved on and is now engaged to actress Caitlin O'Connor, with the couple recently relocating from Los Angeles to Pennsylvania. He acknowledges that no one would have signed up for the trauma he endured, adding that he and Vergara ultimately grew into “different people.”
Why it matters
Celebrity breakups often get boiled down to viral headlines or social media digs, but this account highlights how serious, life-altering medical struggles can change the trajectory of even the most high-profile relationships. It’s a reminder that there’s usually a lot more happening behind the scenes than what we see on the red carpet.
