The gym comment heard 'round the internet
Shane Gillis returned to host Saturday Night Live for a third time this past weekend, but the vibes were definitely off. During his monologue, the comedian took a swing at what women wear to the gym, claiming he didn't know "women just dress like whores now."
The clapback
Schitt's Creek icon Dan Levy wasn't having it. He posted a video to Instagram with the simple, iconic caption “Ffs,” stating, “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores; it makes the men calling them whores misogynists.”
It’s giving main character energy, and the industry is here for it. The comments section quickly became a safe space for stars like Jewel, Lisa Loeb, and Wicked actress Kristin Chenoweth to show their support.
More voices join the chat
Maggie Baird, activist and mother of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, got real about how physical the reaction was for her. She shared Levy’s video, saying she “literally gasped” at the joke. She called out the industry, adding, “How can men and comedy writers still think this is funny! It’s actually dangerous for women to promote this bullsh–.”
Meanwhile, Flavor Flav shouted out Levy’s “important allyship” on X. Maren Morris also entered the chat, posting a video of herself at the gym soundtracked to her song “be a bitch,” captioning it, “leave my gym short wedgie out of it.”
Gillis, who had a brief stint as an SNL cast member before being let go over past offensive remarks, hosted alongside musical guest Rosalía.
Why it matters
The industry is clearly drawing a line in the sand. This collective call-out shows that high-profile figures are no longer staying silent when comedy feels like it’s punching down, especially when it targets women’s autonomy.
