A Global Move for Vietnamese Cinema

Besties, wake up—the third installment of the iconic Vietnamese franchise, Sister Sister 3 (or Chị Chị Em Em 3 if you’re fancy), is officially going global. Specialty distributor 3388 Films just snagged the rights to bring this masterpiece to the Americas, Europe, Australia, Taiwan, and Japan. The deal went down at the Asian Contents & Film Market in Busan, and honestly? We love to see it.

What’s the Vibe?

Directed by Nguyen Huu Hoang and produced by Will Vu, this period piece is giving major main character energy. It’s set in northern Vietnam and draws from the classic Chèo musical theater tradition. The story centers on Thị Mầu, a total icon who refuses to play by the era's rigid Confucian rules. She’s flirting with rebellion, defying feudal norms, and getting caught in a messy, high-stakes web of romance and forbidden secrets. The cast features heavy hitters Ninh Duong Lan Ngoc, Chi Pu, and Ky Duyen, with Steven Nguyen and Quoc Anh also starring.

Why it matters

This isn't just another sequel; it's a bold celebration of Vietnamese culture that isn't afraid to get messy with themes of desire and honor. Thien A. Pham, founder of 3388 Films, said the team is “ecstatic to have acquired such a bold and brazen female-led film.” With the film hitting Vietnamese theaters later this October and an international rollout planned for the end of the year, it’s highkey time to mark your calendars. 3388 Films has a solid track record too, recently pushing Mai to a $2 million box office milestone in North America and Europe, so the vibes are definitely immaculate for this release.
