The slip-up heard 'round the world
SNL host Shane Gillis had a moment during last night's episode that was highkey unplanned. While starring in a Dr. Seuss-themed sketch, Gillis—playing an overprotective son named Zackary—was supposed to be defending his elderly dad from Andrew Dismukes’ character, Sam-I-Am. But when the pressure got a little too real, Gillis blurted out, “He doesn’t f—–g like them!”
It was clearly not in the script, and the cast didn't let it slide. Mikey Day, playing The Lorax in the sketch, immediately clapped back during the scene, telling Zackary, “You’re a loser and you said a bad word!” Gillis just rolled with it and admitted, “Yes, I did.”
A legendary SNL history
Real talk, Gillis has had a wild run with SNL. He was originally hired in 2019 but got fired just days later after some controversial podcast clips resurfaced. He eventually redeemed himself, returning to host in February 2024 and again in March 2025. Saturday’s episode marked his third time taking the stage at Studio 8H.
The sketch was a total fever dream
The scene itself was already giving main character energy. The drama started with questions about why Sam-I-Am was pushing the green eggs and ham so hard, eventually spiraling into accusations about gift card scams and a bizarre revelation that the dad’s ex-wife left him for The Lorax. By the end, Sam-I-Am was literally asking for $5,000 in Walmart gift cards, proving Gillis’ character was right all along. It’s a W for the plot, even if it wasn't the cleanest delivery.
Why it matters
Live TV is a whole mood, and these kinds of unscripted moments remind us that even seasoned performers can have a "wait, did that just happen?" moment on national television.
