The audacity is actually through the roof. River Jones, who is currently serving time for a lethal 2022 gang assault, is lowkey trying to secure a $1 million bag from New York City. The catch? He claims he fell in a Rikers Island shower back in December 2025 and wants the city to pay up for the alleged trauma.
The backstory
In case you missed it, Jones was one of four men involved in the 2022 murder of rapper Avanti Frowner—also known as Money Gang Vontae—inside a Bronx pharmacy. At the time, Jones was just an 18-year-old student at Monroe College. He was convicted of first-degree gang assault and is currently held at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility, with parole eligibility coming up in 2029.
The reality check
Jones filed a petition in Bronx Supreme Court arguing that the shower area lacked necessary mats, leading to his fall. He claimed to suffer "serious" injuries all over his body, including his head, neck, and face. But here is the real tea: medical records from the incident tell a totally different story. The physician who treated him noted he only broke his elbow. He didn't even hit his head or lose consciousness, which makes his massive payout demand highkey wild.
Why it matters
Even though he had surgery for the elbow and was discharged without any major complications, he is still pushing this legal battle against the city. It’s giving main character energy in the worst way possible. For now, both his legal team and the city are staying silent, but the public records make it clear his claims are a stretch.
