The Stats
Forget sharks or bears—real talk, the biggest threat to your safety might be sitting right on your couch. According to CDC data, about 4.5 million Americans get bitten by dogs every year, with someone landing in the ER every 80 seconds. A new study by Gamble Mind just dropped, and it’s giving major 'watch your back' energy.
The US Danger Zones
If you live in Michigan, stay alert. The state topped the list with the highest risk of insurance claims, with residents facing 1 in 7,073 odds of a dog bite claim—69% above the national average. Indiana and Ohio followed close behind. Meanwhile, California saw the highest volume of total claims at 2,830, but because of its massive population, your individual odds there are lower than in Michigan.
NYC Breakdown
Things are getting heated in the Big Apple, too. Reported dog bites in the city spiked nearly 25% from 2024 to 2025. If you're hanging out on Staten Island, keep your guard up—it’s the official hotspot with the highest bite rate per resident. Manhattan and Queens saw the same total number of bites, but Manhattan’s smaller population makes it riskier than Queens. Brooklyn? It’s officially the safest borough on the list.
Why it matters
Whether you’re a dog person or not, these numbers are a wake-up call to be mindful of your surroundings. Real talk: not all dogs are the same, and accidents happen fast. If you're in a high-risk area, maybe skip that spontaneous petting interaction—stay safe out there.
