Imagine rolling up to your local library at the crack of dawn, only to find a literal bear roaming the aisles. That’s exactly what went down at the Mammoth Lakes Library in California this past Wednesday.

Before the doors opened for the day, a furry intruder decided to make the library his own private hangout. Surveillance footage showed the bear strolling across an upper-level carpeted walkway, checking out the collection like he was hunting for a new read.

A very Pooh-like coincidence

The Mono County Office of Education had a field day with this one. Since Wednesday, Oct. 14, marked the 100th anniversary of the very first Winnie the Pooh book hitting shelves, it’s giving major main character energy that a real-life bear would show up on that exact day. The agency jokingly posted that their new “Li-BEAR-ian” was probably just on the hunt for a copy of A.A. Milne’s classic.

The mystery remains

While the internet is lowkey obsessed with the idea of a honey-seeking bookworm, officials haven’t actually confirmed what lured the bear inside or if he managed to snag any snacks. Even more mysterious? No one knows exactly how he got in, but he clearly decided he was done with his browsing session and dipped before the library staff even showed up for work.

Thankfully, there were no shushings, overdue fines, or staff interventions required. The bear just did his thing and peaced out, leaving us with a story that’s highkey the cutest thing to happen in a library, maybe ever.

Why it matters

It’s a rare, wholesome moment where nature meets local community spaces. Plus, the timing with the Winnie the Pooh centenary makes it a total W for fans of literary coincidences.
