The Casting News

Get ready for some serious business drama. Louis Garrel is officially set to play John Elkann, the heir to the legendary Agnelli family behind the automotive titan Fiat, in the upcoming biopic Falcon. He joins Pierfrancesco Favino, who is already locked in to star as the lead, Sergio Marchionne. The film, currently shooting in Toronto, also features Benedetta Cimatti, Barbara Ronchi, and a cameo by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.

The Plot

Directed by the iconic 86-year-old auteur Marco Bellocchio, Falcon is giving major financial thriller vibes. It tracks the journey of Marchionne, a visionary executive who took the wheel of Fiat in 2004 when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy.

"Ruthless and visionary, he axes the top management, teaches John Elkann (Garrel), the young heir suddenly burdened with the family’s legacy, the art of command," the film’s synopsis explains.

Marchionne—who was both Italian and Canadian—eventually pulled off a massive power move in 2009 by taking control of Chrysler during its U.S. government-led bankruptcy. By merging these failing companies, he created the seventh-largest vehicle manufacturer on the planet. It’s giving main character energy, but the film doesn't shy away from the dark side. It explores how this "miracle" came at a devastating cost, highlighting the isolation of a man eventually swallowed by the industry he saved.

Why it matters

This isn't just a car movie; it’s a look at the cutthroat heights of global capitalism. With Bellocchio—the legend behind The Traitor—at the helm, expect a deep, psychological dive into the cost of success. Marchionne passed away in 2018, and this film is poised to be his cinematic legacy.
