A New Main Character Moment
Get ready for some serious girl-boss energy on your screen. Karla Sofía Gascón, the icon who just snagged an Oscar nomination for “Emilia Pérez,” and “Money Heist” legend Itziar Ituño have been confirmed as the leads for a spicy new Spanish series called “When Devils Rule” (“Los demones mandan”).
This isn’t just your average thriller. The six-part series is a high-key political satire with a supernatural twist. The vibe? Think gritty reality meets urban fantasy. The plot follows four women from working-class backgrounds who hold down essential jobs—healthcare, education, caretaking, and journalism—as they realize that the world’s chaos is being stirred up by actual demons hiding in plain sight as wealthy tycoons and politicians.
The Plot Thickens
Creator and producer Nano Arrieta mentioned the show is loosely based on the classic novel “The Journey of the Seven Demons” by Manuel Mujica Lainez. But don't expect a boring book report—it’s getting a major glow-up. Arrieta explained the shift, saying, “The demons are already here. You only have to look at genocide, the rise of fascism, political extremism and everything that is happening around us.”
In the show, Gascón is set to play Manuela, a teacher at a high-end school, while Ituño will portray Evita, the personal secretary to a prime minister. These women link up at a community center to support neighbors and migrants, eventually realizing they are the only ones who can call out the “devils” pulling the strings.
Behind the Scenes
Ituño is reuniting with director Rodrigo Susarte for this project, and the chemistry between the cast and crew is clearly a W. Arrieta shared that working with them is a total dream, noting that their off-screen personalities are just as strong and impactful as the roles they take on.
The team is currently shopping the project at Tallinn’s TV Beats Co-Financing Market, where they’re aiming to snag the Council of Europe Series Co-Production Development Award. They’re on the hunt for partners to help bring this vision to life.
Why it matters
In an era where political discourse can feel like a total dumpster fire, “When Devils Rule” aims to turn that anxiety into a high-stakes, supernatural fightback, proving that real-world issues and genre-bending storytelling are a massive mood.
