The Spanish TV takeover
If you’ve been feeling like your watchlist is lowkey dominated by Spanish hits lately, you aren’t imagining it. According to a fresh report from the consultancy firm GECA presented at Mipcom, Spanish fiction is absolutely thriving. We’re talking about a massive 83% spike in local premieres between 2021 and 2025. Real talk: Spain is currently holding down the seventh spot in global fiction premieres, sitting pretty in the top 10.
What’s the vibe?
So, what are people actually watching? Drama is the undisputed queen of the genre world, making up half of all new premieres in the first half of 2026. Whether it’s high-stakes crime, suspense, or fantasy, the audience is clearly obsessed. Comedies and dramedies are also coming in hot, taking up about 40% of the new release space.
Gloria Saló from GECA noted that this success comes down to creators who aren't afraid to take risks and mix up genre boundaries. Plus, platforms are getting smarter with reboots and sequels—nine renewals dropped in the first half of the year alone, including fan-faves like Machos Alfa.
Digital is king
Linear TV? We don’t know her. The report confirms that 90% of new Spanish premieres dropped directly onto streaming platforms. With big players like Netflix, Prime Video, Atresplayer, and Movistar Plus+ leading the charge, the market is 100% focused on on-demand viewing.
Why it matters
Spanish TV is no longer just a local affair; it’s a global power player. With 30 new titles already out in 2026 and more on the way, the industry has proven that leaning into creative, boundary-pushing stories is a total W.
