The fumble struggle is real
The Buffalo Bills pulled off a wild 37-34 overtime win against the Rams on Monday, but the vibes were almost ruined by ball security issues. Star running back James Cook III fumbled twice during the game, and that second drop nearly cost the Bills the entire matchup.
Coach Joe Brady isn't sugarcoating it. While he acknowledged that Cook is running the ball at an elite level, he was blunt about the turnovers. "Right now, we're putting the ball in harm's way," Brady said Tuesday. "At some point there has to be consequences when we're putting negative stuff out there."
Why the heat is rising
Cook is having a massive 2026, averaging 106.4 yards per game through five weeks. He’s coming off a career-best season where he took home the NFL rushing title with 1,621 yards. But the fumbles are a total L. He’s already coughed up the ball four times this season—the most for any non-QB—and he lost it six times last year.
Brady confirmed the team is having those real talks, but the clock is ticking. "It's gotta improve, or the carries are gonna decrease," he warned. If Cook doesn't lock in, we could see a lot more of Ty Johnson and Ray Davis getting reps in the backfield.
Why it matters
Even with the big win, turnovers against better teams are going to be a death sentence for Buffalo. If Cook can't protect the rock, the Bills might have to bench their biggest offensive weapon to save their playoff push. It’s giving high stakes for the rest of the season.
