The plot thickens in the NFL's long-standing drama over hiring practices. A recently unsealed 2024 scouting report on Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has hit the public, and his legal team is calling the contents out for being full of "racial stereotypes" and straight-up retaliation.
The receipts
This report, originally prepped for the Las Vegas Raiders when they were hunting for a new head coach, is a mess. It lists six strengths and seven weaknesses, but it’s the way they’re framed that has everyone talking. One "strength" note hilariously points out that Flores is "polished" despite being from a predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhood in Brooklyn, comparing his background to Mike Tyson.
The fallout
On the flip side, the "weaknesses" section is highkey problematic. It claims Flores "can fool you with his polish," lacks self-awareness, and acts "erratic." The document even cites his ongoing discrimination lawsuit against the NFL as a reason not to hire him, labeling it a "distraction."
Attorney Michael J. Willemin didn't mince words, stating the documents prove that Flores’ fight for accountability is being met with "unlawful retaliation." He also noted that the profile "leans heavily on racial stereotypes."
Why it matters
Flores, who is Black, has been pushing back against the league since his 2022 lawsuit, which accused the NFL of being "rife with racism." With coaches like Steve Wilks and Ray Horton also involved, this isn't just a one-man show—it's a massive challenge to the league's institutional culture. The NFL hasn't responded yet, but the conversation around bias in coaching hires is definitely not going anywhere.
