The Heist of the Century

Main character energy, activate! Our favorite Daredevil, Charlie Cox, is returning to the London stage, and the premise of his new project is absolutely unhinged in the best way possible. He’s set to lead the world premiere of The King’s Ransom, a new play by Stuart Slade, and real talk: it’s giving major chaos.

Set in 1977 Memphis, the plot follows Cox as Vince Black, a small-time criminal who decides to go for the ultimate W. The mission? To kidnap Elvis Presley’s corpse, stash the King in a chest freezer, and demand a million-dollar ransom. Vince recruits a ragtag squad of misfits and dropouts to pull off what the synopsis calls “the heist of the century.” Honestly? Say less.

The Squad and The Stage

Cox is joined by a star-studded ensemble, including The Inbetweeners icon Blake Harrison as Rusty, along with Tom Fletcher, Matthew Flynn, Leo Patrick, Jenny Rainsford, Christopher Short as the King himself, Cherrelle Skeete, and Ronnie Yorke. The role of Martha is being shared by Ruby Barker, Eira Kay, and Trixie Willis.

Behind the scenes, Matthew Dunster—the genius who directed 2:22: A Ghost Story—is calling the shots. The production kicks off with previews on December 5, officially opening on December 16, and will be running at the Donmar Warehouse until February 6, 2027. It’s a bit of a homecoming for Cox, who previously graced the Donmar stage in The Prince of Homburg back in 2010. Whether you’re a theater kid or just love a wild plot, this is highkey one to watch.

Why it matters

Charlie Cox is a powerhouse, and seeing him take on a dark, satirical role like Vince Black after his gritty work in the MCU is a flex. Plus, The King’s Ransom looks like it’s going to be a total cultural moment for London theater this winter.
