Avengers: Doomsday Co-Director Talks Character Evolution and Fan Pressure

The MCU Tightrope Walk

Directing the next chapter of the Avengers isn't exactly a walk in the park. Anthony Russo, co-director of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, recently got real about the sheer pressure of evolving Marvel’s most iconic heroes. During a Q&A for Avengers: Endgame Encore, Russo explained that finding the perfect balance between pushing the plot forward and honoring the characters fans have been obsessed with for over a decade is, lowkey, "very difficult."

No Single Fan Voice

Real talk: trying to please every Marvel stan is impossible. Russo pointed out that "fandom does not speak with a single voice," noting that everyone has a different vibe when it comes to which versions of these characters they actually like. While he and his brother, co-director Joe Russo, have massive respect for the history these heroes have built, they know they have to pivot. "We need to surprise ourselves in terms of who those characters are... and in doing that, we hopefully surprise audiences as well," he said.

Thor’s Serious Era

The need for change is obvious to anyone who saw the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. It features a much grittier, serious Thor compared to the version we saw in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. While that movie made bank, it definitely divided the fanbase, with some feeling the character was getting a little "too silly" for his own good. It’s giving a much-needed course correction.

The Mystery Cast

If you're wondering exactly who is showing up in the flick, you're not alone. Even the directors are losing track. Russo admitted the cast is so massive that he struggles to remember who has been officially announced and who is still a secret. Confirmed names already include Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, and Tom Hiddleston, but stay tuned for the rest.
