A New Chapter for 'The Pit'

If you’re obsessed with the Turkish drama Çukur—known to international fans as The Pit—get ready because the story is officially expanding. Prime Video has scooped up the global rights to Çukur: Vartolu, a new spin-off movie that’s lowkey making waves for its unique production process.

Produced by the powerhouse studio Ay Yapim, this film was created through their Singapore-based AI studio, AI Yapim. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because they’re the same team that dropped Castle Walls on Prime earlier this summer, which was hailed as the first show made end-to-end with artificial intelligence.

Before you start tripping about the "AI-generated" label, here’s the tea on how they made it. While the characters, faces, and settings were built using AI, the actual performances are 100% human. Real actors performed the scenes, and then AI mapped the characters over their movements and expressions. Plus, all the dialogue was recorded by real voice actors. The original Çukur series was a massive deal, airing in 105 countries and racking up over 6.4 billion views on YouTube since 2017. While the show focused on the Koçovalı family and their reign over an Istanbul neighborhood, this film is a deep dive into the origin story of Vartolu Sadettin—the illegitimate son of the Koçovalı clan.

The story tracks his rough childhood in eastern Türkiye and his eventual transition from a boy waiting for his father to find him, into the dangerous man known as Vartolu. With the tagline “No one is more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose,” it’s set to be a heavy, high-stakes watch.

Why it matters

This is a major test for the industry. Çukur was a hit as a traditional live-action series, so it’ll be a real vibe check to see how the fanbase reacts to a movie that leans this heavily into AI production. If it lands, it could totally change how studios look at expanding established franchises.
