The direct path to crypto
Standard Chartered just made a massive move for the degens in the UAE. The global bank announced that its wealthy clients in the region can now buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through their bank accounts. This is a huge pivot from the usual route of using separate wallets or third-party exchanges, which can get sketchy real quick.
This new service is live for “Professional Investors” and has been fully greenlit by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The bank is touting this as a global first, marking the first time an international bank has launched a crypto trading product like this in the UAE. By keeping everything in a “closed-loop model,” Standard Chartered says they are handling all the custody and settlement in-house, which is meant to keep your bags safer by cutting out third-party risks.
Why it matters
This isn't just a random experiment. Samir Subberwal, the bank’s global head of wealth solutions, noted that clients are vibing with crypto but want the security of a regulated institution. This launch brings digital assets straight into their core wealth offering.
Before this, if you were a high-net-worth client, you were stuck with indirect exposure like ETFs or derivatives. Now, you can actually own the coins themselves. Standard Chartered has been consistently bullish on the space, with their analysts previously predicting Bitcoin could hit $100,000 by the end of the year.
Reminder: This is just the news, not financial advice. Crypto markets are volatile—stay smart and do your own research before you ape into anything.
Why it matters
Traditional finance is officially leaning into the on-chain world. By offering regulated, in-house custody for Bitcoin and Ethereum, Standard Chartered is bridging the gap for institutional and wealthy investors who want exposure without the headache of managing their own private keys.
