The situation
South African authorities are currently investigating the discovery of a woman's body in the Tembisa neighborhood, northeast of Johannesburg. This marks the tenth such death in the area in recent months, and the circumstances are undeniably heavy. The body was discovered Saturday morning at a local cemetery and identified by a friend who had seen her at a bar the night before.
The investigation
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni stated that officials are analyzing the scene for evidence. While it is early in the investigation, Mthombeni noted that authorities cannot rule out the possibility of a serial killer, citing a "similar victimology" and "modus operandi" across the recent deaths in Ekurhuleni and one in Soweto.
Since July, bodies have been appearing in similar conditions, primarily concentrated around Kempton Park. Three men have already appeared in court in connection with one of these cases, and police are still working to track down other potential suspects.
Why it matters
The ongoing violence has sparked a massive outcry across South Africa, which already faces some of the highest rates of gender-based violence globally. With 569 women killed between April and June alone—according to the South African Human Rights Commission—the government is under immense pressure. It’s been less than a year since officials declared gender-based violence a national disaster, and the vibes are off as the death toll continues to climb, leaving communities in fear.
