The situation

Real talk: the vibes on the northern beaches of Sydney have been absolutely off lately. A 13-year-old boy was arrested this weekend after a string of disturbing incidents involving women and girls on local walking trails.

New South Wales police launched Strike Force Mexvo to investigate after reports started piling up in early October. The pattern was consistent: a male on an ebike would approach victims, allegedly make inappropriate comments, and commit sexual touching before fleeing the scene on his bike.

The charges

The teenager turned himself in at Mona Vale police station on Saturday evening. He’s now facing 11 charges in total: eight counts of sexually touching another person without consent and three counts of behaving in an offensive manner in a public place. Police confirmed the 11 alleged incidents involved victims aged between 13 and 54.

The investigation

Supt John Duncan had previously noted that the nature of the Narrabeen bushland trails made the investigation difficult because of the lack of consistent CCTV coverage. Investigators were able to move forward after releasing images of a suspect, leading to the eventual arrest.

Why it matters

Public safety in outdoor spaces is highkey non-negotiable. This case highlights how quickly a local trail can become a site of trauma, and the community is understandably shaken. The teen has been granted conditional bail and is set to appear in children's court on 4 November.
