Dodging the Bite

Ever wonder what the Mystic Falls universe would look like if Bucky Barnes had been brooding in the Salvatore boarding house? Turns out, we were almost this close to a very different timeline. Sebastian Stan recently opened up about passing on the iconic role of Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stan admitted he was lowkey burnt out after his time on the show Kings. At the time, he was pretty convinced that any new project he signed onto wouldn't even make it past season one. Plus, he wasn't exactly looking to get typecast in the "supernatural world" right after The Covenant.

Looking back, he’s totally at peace with the decision. "I don’t know if I was really ready for that kind of exposure when I was younger," he said. "I’m definitely in a place right now where I wouldn’t change anything."

The Great Casting Chaos

Stan wasn't just considered for Stefan; casting director Lesli Gelles-Raymond noted that producers actually dreamed of casting him as Damon Salvatore. The drama behind the scenes was wild, with showrunners Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson famously feeling pressured into casting Paul Wesley—even though they didn't initially see him as the "heartthrob" lead. They were dead wrong, obviously.

It wasn't just the brothers, either. The casting process was giving absolute chaos. Everyone from Ashley Tisdale (who turned it down for Hellcats) to potential cameos from Ashlee Simpson was on the table. Nina Dobrev—who eventually secured the role of Elena—didn't even leave an impression during her first audition because she was sick. She had to tape herself later to convince them, and honestly? She ate.

Why it matters

This story is the ultimate "what if" of the 2000s teen drama era. It’s a reminder that even the shows that define a generation are held together by chaotic casting room nerves and "wrong" first impressions. Sometimes, not getting the part is the biggest plot twist of all.
