The news

Comedian and actor Judith Lucy just dropped a "not-so-fun update" on Instagram, revealing she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer. In classic Judith Lucy fashion, she broke the news with a video that was as much of a comedy set as it was a health update.

After a routine mammogram flagged something "a bit weird," Lucy went for a lumpectomy. During the procedure, she says a doctor—who she claims is literally named Doctor Fun—discovered more cancer. While the diagnosis is thankfully early-stage and non-aggressive, she’s decided to go all-in with a double mastectomy, which is scheduled for later this month.

Keepin' it 100

Lucy is handling the situation with the kind of dry wit her fans live for. While talking about the decision to remove both breasts, she joked about her "large and spectacular" history with them, noting that she’s looking forward to the "bra-free" life.

It’s giving major main character energy, especially since she just released a book titled Well Well Well, which critiques the wellness industry and the obsession with quick fixes. She even called out the irony of dropping a book about health right as she got her own diagnosis, joking, "There’s nothing like releasing a book about wellness as you’re being diagnosed with breast cancer."

Why it matters

Real talk: Lucy is using her platform to remind everyone to stay on top of their screenings, telling her audience: "Ladies, for the love of God, keep up with your mammograms." Despite the shock, she says she’s doing okay and plans to keep her followers posted on her journey—or as she put it, she’ll be "keeping you abreast of everything, Australia." Say less.
