Setting the record straight

If you were under the impression that the Lennon family inheritance was a dramatic, unfair split, it’s giving misinformation. Sean Ono Lennon took to X this past weekend to clear up some persistent rumors about how his late father, John Lennon, distributed his estate between him and his half brother, Julian Lennon.

It all started after Sean posted a wholesome photo of the two of them hanging out in nature to celebrate his 51st birthday. A commenter chimed in with a theory that Sean inherited the bulk of the estate while Julian was left in the dust, forced to battle it out in court for a “comparatively small share.”

Sean wasn’t having it. He replied, “Julian and I inherited the same amount from our dad. Our trusts were equal. Although his was slightly more, but negligibly so.”

No bad blood here

Real talk: despite the tabloids love for a good family feud, the two brothers have actually maintained a pretty solid relationship. They’ve been spotted together at events, like the 2021 premiere of the Beatles documentary Get Back, and frequently post each other on socials.

Both brothers are musically talented in their own right. Julian, 63—John’s son with his first wife, Cynthia—has a solid discography, including his 1984 hit album Valotte. Meanwhile, Sean, the son of John and Yoko Ono, has carved out his own path with bands like Cibo Matto and The Claypool Lennon Delirium.

Why it matters

Even decades after John Lennon’s death in 1980, the public remains lowkey obsessed with his personal life. By shutting down these inheritance myths, Sean is reminding everyone that, despite the internet’s attempt to paint a picture of bitter litigation, the reality is just a couple of brothers who seem to be vibing just fine. Say less.
