Real talk: could you even imagine anyone else as Molly Flynn? It turns out, we almost lived in a timeline where Melissa McCarthy didn't get her breakout role on the iconic sitcom Mike & Molly. In his new memoir Sitcom, series creator Chuck Lorre spilled the tea on his massive behind-the-scenes battle with CBS, and honestly? The vibes were off. ## The casting drama Lorre shared that when he was putting the show together back in 2010, the network 'hated' his choice of McCarthy for the lead. According to Lorre, some executives were dead set on finding a 'hot young woman' for the part—and one even suggested hiring a thinner actress and just putting her in a fat suit. Can you imagine the audacity? Lorre wasn't having it. He told E! News he eventually 'grown a pair' and flat-out told the network, 'No, that's my Molly, and I can live with your unhappiness.' ## Main character energy The risk totally paid off. McCarthy brought such incredible energy to the role that she secured an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy for the show’s first season. Lorre felt pretty smug about his decision later, especially when her career exploded with her unforgettable performance in Bridesmaids. 'She’s a once in a generation actor,' Lorre added. 'She's a supremely gifted actress.' It’s giving classic Hollywood blunder averted. Since the show wrapped in 2016, she’s become a total superstar with blockbuster roles and more awards to her name. We really love to see a legend winning. ## Why it matters This story is a total reminder that having the courage to trust your vision—especially when people in power are pushing for outdated beauty standards—can change the course of pop culture history. Lorre’s refusal to compromise gave us one of the most beloved comedic actresses of our generation.
