The Squad is Locked In

Real talk: the vibes are immaculate for the Australian national rugby league teams. Coach Kevin Walters just dropped the 23-man Kangaroos squad, and it is absolutely stacked. Leading the charge, Isaah Yeo is officially stepping up as captain—and he’s lowkey playing through the pain, choosing to delay pectoral surgery just to guide the squad through the Rugby League World Cup.

The Fresh Faces and Big Returns

Sydney Roosters’ own Sam Walker is officially on the roster, one of six debutants looking to make a massive impact. He’s going to be in a high-stakes battle for the halves spot against heavy hitters like Cameron Munster, Tom Dearden, and Mitchell Moses. Also on deck? Brisbane star Reece Walsh, who is fighting for the fullback role against Clive Churchill medallist James Tedesco. Plus, Latrell Mitchell is back in the mix after a rough stretch with injuries, and honestly, the plot thickens for the Kangaroos' chances.

Coach Walters says the talent level across the board is unmatched. "We have some real strike power and a significant amount of experience, along with size, power and speed," Walters said. The home tournament kicks off with Australia facing New Zealand on 15 October in Sydney.

Jillaroos Join the Party

It’s not just the men’s side making moves. Coach Jess Skinner also announced her 23-player squad for the Jillaroos, with Sydney Roosters captain Isabelle Kelly leading for the first time. The Roosters are dominating the selection with eight players represented. The Women’s Rugby League World Cup starts 16 October, where the hosts will take on Samoa at CommBank Stadium.

Why it matters

This tournament is the ultimate litmus test. With the sheer amount of talent spread across the top nations, the Kangaroos and Jillaroos need to be at their absolute best to secure the World Cup on home soil.
