New shows are coming to your watchlist
Italian public broadcaster RAI just dropped a major move ahead of Mipcom, snagging a slate of female-led drama series from Beta Film. It’s giving main character energy, and it’s a solid reminder that government-backed networks are still lowkey dominating the European TV scene.
The lineup
First up is Barton Vet, a 12-episode U.S.-Canadian procedural. It follows Dr. Kate Barton, played by Georgina Reilly, who returns to the countryside to take over her family’s animal clinic after her father passes. If you like shows that balance animal rescues with a side of personal healing, this is definitely one to watch.
Next, we’ve got the French thriller A Guilty Affair. This four-part drama centers on a high school principal, Morgane, who is on the hunt for her missing daughter. The plot thickens when the daughter’s physical education teacher becomes the primary suspect in what sounds like a massive mess.
Finally, the German period drama Mozart Mozart is a total vibe. It’s set in 1780s Vienna and focuses on Maria Anna Mozart, the sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She’s gifted but totally overlooked, so she starts secretly performing under her brother’s name. Real talk, it’s a bold reimagining of history that we are here for.
Why it matters
These acquisitions prove that despite tightening budgets, major European public broadcasters like RAI, France Télévisions, and Germany’s ARD are still the ones driving the biggest investments in television today.
