The original chaos
If you were even a toddler in the mid-2000s, you might know the cultural fever dream that was To Catch a Predator. Hosted by Chris Hansen, the Dateline NBC segment basically turned sting operations into must-see, cringe-inducing reality TV. The format was simple but wild: potential predators showed up to a house thinking they were meeting a minor, only to get confronted by Hansen and some truly stomach-turning chat logs. It was the ultimate 'it’s giving circus' moment for 2006 TV.
When the plot twisted
But the vibes were off from the start. The show’s popularity came at a cost, specifically the tragic 2006 death of Texas prosecutor Bill Conradt. When police arrived at his home to arrest him for solicitation, he died by suicide as cameras rolled. It’s lowkey haunting, and it’s the exact event that inspired Primetime, a new film starring Robert Pattinson as a Hansen-esque figure.
In the movie, director Lance Oppenheim explores how the production prioritized ratings over reality. Pattinson noted in A24 press notes that the show was subject to the same entertainment criteria as sitcoms, which is wild considering the subject matter. Hansen, however, remains unbothered, telling the Los Angeles Times he skipped an early screening to avoid a standard NDA and has since been promoting his own true crime network, TruBlu, in theaters.
The fallout
Conradt’s family famously sued NBC for $105 million, alleging the network 'steamrolled' police for the sake of a spectacle. The suit reached an undisclosed settlement in 2008. While To Catch a Predator ended shortly after, Hansen maintains the show simply ran its course, telling TIME back in 2015 that it successfully raised awareness.
Why it matters
Primetime isn’t a direct documentary, but it brings the ethics of '00s reality TV back into the conversation. It forces us to look at how we once treated criminal stings as blockbuster entertainment, and whether the 'ringleader' antics of the era actually served justice or just created a messy, dangerous spectacle.
