The 'Finger is back at it?

Real talk: if you grew up obsessed with Australian rock, you might want to sit down. Powderfinger, the legendary Brisbane five-piece who lowkey defined an era, seems to be stirring from their long slumber. Since their 2010 farewell tour, the band—Bernard Fanning, Ian Haug, Darren Middleton, John “JC” Collins, and Jon Coghill—have stayed out of the main spotlight, but something is officially going down.

It all started with a cryptic Instagram handle: @thereturnoftheelectrichorsemen. For those who aren't deep-lore nerds, that’s a direct nod to their 1996 Double Allergic track, "(The Return of) The Electric Horseman." The account even added five horse emojis to their bio—one for each member. It’s giving major main character energy.

The clues are everywhere

It’s not just a social media stunt. Fans have spotted billboards across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane featuring mysterious codes and lyrics. As of Thursday, Oct. 8, the band’s official website and socials have been totally scrubbed, leaving behind nothing but a cryptic red letter and a poem.

Whether this is a full-blown reunion, a 30th-anniversary reissue of Double Allergic, or something entirely new, the fan base is losing it. Considering they still dominate the charts—they nabbed the most entries in triple j’s "Hottest 100" of Australian songs last year—the hype is 100% real.

Why it matters

Powderfinger isn't just another band; they’re an Australian institution with 18 ARIA Awards and five consecutive No. 1 albums. Even after breaking up 16 years ago, their influence is still very much alive, and seeing them tease a comeback is the kind of nostalgia hit we didn't know we needed.
