If you walked into Meta Connect this week, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a fashion show for silicon valley. The social media giant is going all-in on smart glasses, and they were literally everywhere. From staffers to influencers, it’s giving “future of computing,” but with a wearable twist.
No camera, no drama
After dealing with major heat over privacy concerns—specifically accusations that their camera-equipped specs were basically “pervert glasses”—Meta is pivoting. They showed off new, unreleased audio-only glasses that ditch the camera entirely. They’re super light, comfy, and come with six microphones, which should satisfy anyone worried about being secretly recorded.
Meet Muse: Your new digital shadow
The real kicker is the integration with Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent. Think of it as a wearable ChatGPT that stays on your face. You can give it commands verbally to send emails or manage your to-do list while you're literally just living your life.
I got a chance to demo it, and real talk, it was a bit comical. The agent gets easily confused if you're holding a side conversation with an actual human. It kept talking over the Meta staffer because it thought I was addressing it. It’s definitely a work in progress, but if you don't mind looking like you're whispering to your sunglasses in public, it’s a total W for productivity.
Accessibility for the win
Meta also dropped a pair of audio-only glasses specifically for the hearing impaired. This actually hits different because it serves a real-world purpose. They simulate hearing assistance by amplifying voices, and at $150, they’re a fraction of the cost of standard hearing aids, which can run upwards of $1,600. It’s highkey the most practical thing they’ve built in years.
Why it matters
Mark Zuckerberg is betting the house that glasses are the next smartphone. Whether or not society actually wants to wear tech on their faces remains the biggest question. Meta is casting a wide net, hoping that if they make the specs stylish and genuinely useful, the rest of the world will eventually say less and just start wearing them.
