The days of spotting a scam because of a few typos or janky grammar are officially over. National Trading Standards is warning that fraudsters are using AI to supercharge their schemes, making them look highkey professional and legit at a fraction of the cost.

The New Wave of Fraud

Criminals are cloning websites for fake retailers in minutes. These sites often claim to be family-owned, UK-based businesses, complete with AI-generated photos of picturesque high streets. If you place an order, you’re looking at a big L: either the item never shows up, or you get a cheap, mass-produced knockoff shipped from overseas.

It gets even wilder. Scammers are now using voice cloning and deepfake videos to impersonate your family or friends, often reaching out during a fake 'emergency' to demand cash. They’re even using AI for romance scams, where the software remembers all your personal details to keep the convo going for months. Plus, they can blast out perfect, personalized phishing emails and DMs on a massive scale.

How to protect your bag

Since the usual 'red flags' like bad spelling don't work anymore, you have to move different. Trading standards experts suggest these moves to stay secure:

  • Stay local (IRL): Never send money, gift cards, or personal info to anyone you haven't actually met face-to-face.
  • Verify everything: Use the Financial Conduct Authority's Firm Checker to see if a biz is legit, and always contact a company directly if you see a job ad or product that looks too good to be true.
  • Trust nothing: Just because you heard a voice or saw a face on a video call doesn't mean it’s actually them. Deepfakes are becoming scary realistic.
  • Slow your roll: Criminals bank on urgency. If someone is pressuring you to act fast, stop, think, and breathe. That pressure is almost always a sign the vibes are off.

If you think you’ve been targeted, you can report it to Report Fraud at 0300 1232040 or reach out to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline at 0808 223 1133. Stay vigilant, fam.
