If you were holding out hope for a heartwarming reunion between the Duttons, we have some tea. Luke Grimes, who brought Kayce Dutton to life on Yellowstone, just dropped a bit of a bombshell: he and Kevin Costner haven't spoken a single word to each other since the show wrapped their characters' storylines.

No bad blood, just busy vibes

In a recent interview, Grimes made it clear there isn't any secret drama fueling the silence. He explained that since John Dutton was killed off in the 2024 series finale, the two haven't been in touch, keeping it 100 about the reason why. "I have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together," Grimes told USA Today. "Not for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on."

Even though they aren't texting, Grimes still holds the Yellowstone legacy in high regard. He’s currently locked in as Kayce for the spinoff Marshals. When asked about a potential flashback cameo for Costner, Grimes said it "would be cool," but honestly, he thinks it’s probably a long shot at this point.

The flashback wishlist

Grimes also shared an interesting take on who he’d actually want to see in a flashback scene. Instead of bringing back the family patriarch, he thinks the narrative would hit harder if it focused on Kayce’s wife. "If there was a flashback, I’d probably rather it be with Monica than John," he explained. "I think that would be more poignant to the character."

The context on the departure

It’s no secret that Costner’s exit from the main show was a major talking point. While fans were spinning theories, creator Taylor Sheridan clarified on The Bill Simmons Podcast that Costner was only ever contracted for three seasons, but went above and beyond by staying for two more. Costner eventually moved on to helm his Horizon: An American Saga film series, posting on Instagram that his time on Yellowstone was an experience that "really changed me."

Why it matters

Even as the Yellowstone universe expands into new spinoffs, this confirms that the original cast has moved on to their own main character energy. It’s a reminder that even when a show defines a generation of television, the behind-the-scenes reality is often just actors living their separate lives.
