The 21-year-old Kansas State University junior was on Highway 18 this past Friday night when a freak series of events turned her drive into a nightmare. Kyra and her boyfriend, Dalten Grabast, were heading toward Salinas when a massive insulation pallet tumbled off a truck, blocking their path.
According to her friend Sara Celeen, who set up a GoFundMe for the student, Dalten swerved to miss the debris, but another vehicle slammed into his car. In the chaotic aftermath, Kyra pulled over and stepped out, only to find herself in the path of a truck barreling down the highway. In a split-second attempt to save her life, she jumped backward, inadvertently plunging 70 feet off the overpass and hitting a tree on the way down.
Real talk: the fact that she survived is wild. Kyra suffered fractures to her back, pelvis, and tailbone, but she has already undergone surgery to realign her hips. Sara shared a pic of the two of them smiling, noting that Kyra is “doing very well for someone who fell 70 feet.” It’s giving guardian angel energy, as her friends are incredibly relieved she isn't paralyzed.
