The Strategy That Could Backfire
Real talk: if you’re stalling on your heating oil order hoping for a price dip, you might want to rethink that move. Suppliers are flagging that customers are trying to "eke out" the last bit of fuel in their tanks to avoid current high prices. But experts are warning that this strategy is lowkey risky—if a cold snap hits and you're running on empty, you could be facing a major emergency and even higher rush-delivery fees.
The Financial Reality
According to data from BoilerJuice, UK heating oil prices have skyrocketed by about 75% since late February, largely tied to the ongoing conflict in Iran. While it’s tempting to try and time the market for a lower price, the vibes are not exactly optimistic. Ellen Fraser, an energy expert at Baringa, suggests not waiting. She told BBC Radio 4’s Money Box that prices are expected to remain elevated at least through April or May. By then, it’s obviously way too late to be thinking about filling up your tank for the season.
Why It Matters
The Fuel Distribution Association (UKIFDA) is urging households not to sleep on this. With international market volatility, supply chains can get messy fast. Ken Mackness, CEO of UKIFDA, noted that recent global events show just how quickly wholesale energy costs can spiral. If you’re banking on prices dropping, you’re essentially gambling with your winter comfort. For those struggling, remember the government previously launched a £50 million emergency fund for heating oil costs, but the smartest financial move right now is securing your supply before the market potentially forces another L on your wallet.
