The return of the girls
Grab your yellow mesh, because it’s actually happening. HBO has officially greenlit a revival of the cult-classic dramedy Girls. Lena Dunham is bringing the chaos back for a five-episode limited series, with production set to kick off in 2027—a full decade after the original series wrapped its sixth season.
Who is coming back?
If you were worried about the squad being split up, don't be. The core four—Lena Dunham (Hannah Horvath), Allison Williams (Marnie Michaels), Jemima Kirke (Jessa Johansson), and Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna Shapiro)—are all reprising their roles. Plus, Andrew Rannells is back as the legendary Elijah Krantz.
Behind the scenes, Judd Apatow is returning as an executive producer, working alongside Dunham’s own banner, Good Thing Going.
The plot thickens (or just ages)
Dunham says the inspiration for the return hit her right around her fortieth birthday. "I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't quite picture them in the present day," she shared. She’s previously teased what she thinks her characters are up to now: Shoshanna running a zero-waste athleisure startup, Marnie on her third marriage, and Jessa living on a boat in Croatia. It’s giving… realistic messiness.
Notably, Adam Driver and former co-showrunner Jenni Konner are not part of the revival. Dunham’s recent memoir, Famesick, detailed significant friction between her and both individuals during the show's original run, citing issues ranging from onset behavior to professional boundaries.
Why it matters
Girls lowkey defined a generation of messy, twenty-something existential dread. Seeing how these characters navigate their thirties and approach forty is going to be a major cultural moment. Whether you’re a day-one fan or just discovering the cringe-comedy gold, it’s a massive W to see the gang back together.
