A tragic end to a fishing trip
Real talk: things took a dark turn at Lake Apopka on Friday. A 71-year-old man, identified by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission as Steven Hamilton of Winter Garden, was killed in a brutal alligator attack while fishing on the shore.
Emergency crews got the call around 5 p.m., but the situation was lowkey terrifying. According to Winter Garden Fire Chief Jose Gainza, other alligators were still in the water, which made the recovery effort incredibly difficult. The victim's body was eventually recovered at 7 p.m.
What happened to the gator?
The 11.8-foot beast responsible for the attack was caught and put down by FWC trappers. People in the area reported hearing a “loud bang” near the scene. Winter Garden Police Captain Michael Mason clarified the noise, noting it was the sound of the gator being “removed as a danger to the public.”
Why it matters
Lake Apopka is home to one of the largest populations of American alligators in Central Florida. This is a brutal reminder that when you’re hanging out near Florida waterways, the wildlife is not just for the vibes—you have to stay hyper-aware of your surroundings at all times.
