The Incident
On October 10, 2026, a 70-year-old man was shopping at a Publix in Punta Gorda, Florida, when he was attacked from behind. According to the Punta Gorda Police Department, 47-year-old Ramsey Thomas Lyons struck the victim and slashed him with a box cutter. The victim suffered a four-to-six-inch cut from his cheek to his neck and a laceration to his chest. Police found Lyons at the scene with his hands on his head and recovered the weapon nearby.
The Motive
Lyons admitted to authorities that he spent two days planning the attack. He told police he had a "dislike for the 1960's era" and targeted the victim because he felt the man looked like he was from that decade, stating he wanted to "ace him out." He also admitted he ditched the weapon in the store so police wouldn't use force against him.
A History of Violence
This isn't Lyons' first run-in with the law. In March 2025, he sucker-punched a 16-year-old at a Wawa in Port Charlotte. The teen’s mother, Shawna Gentry, said she begged prosecutors to keep Lyons in jail, warning that he was a volatile threat. Instead, the court placed him in a mental health diversion program. By July 2026, the court terminated his probation with a "graduation" notice, despite Gentry's fears. She believes Lyons used his mental health claims as a calculated legal shield to avoid accountability.
Why it matters
This case is sparking major heat about how our justice system handles repeat offenders and mental health programs. For you, it’s a grim reminder that when the system misses the mark on accountability, the consequences can be life-altering for innocent people in your own neighborhood.
