The comeback is on
Formula One is officially back in Sepang for the first time since 2017. While it’s technically branded as the "Bahrain Grand Prix"—a one-off swap due to regional conflict—the vibes on the track are all that matter. The humidity is real, the heat is intense, and the championship race is reaching a boiling point.
Kimi Antonelli is currently leading the pack, but his teammate George Russell is coming off a dominant performance in Baku where he cut the gap by 15 points. Antonelli is holding a 66-point lead with only eight rounds to go, but after a rough outing in Azerbaijan, he is hungry to reclaim his throne. Meanwhile, Russell is feeling highkey confident, finally clicking with his car for the first time this season.
Mercedes plays it cool
With both drivers gunning for the title, the tension is mounting. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is keeping his cool, insisting that the team’s philosophy hasn’t changed. "The team comes first," Wolff said, noting that they are committed to giving both drivers an equal shot to secure the win.
To help their chances, Mercedes has dropped a massive set of upgrades at Sepang, targeting the floor, rear suspension, and bodywork. It’s their second major development push of the year, but with Sepang’s abrasive track and high-degradation surface, there’s no telling how these parts will handle the extreme heat. Friday practice saw the pair hovering in seventh and eighth, proving they have some fine-tuning to do before qualifying.
The Red Bull threat
Don’t sleep on Max Verstappen, either. He’s looking for his first win of the season and is clearly pushing to end the year on a high note. Verstappen’s Red Bull looked solid in practice, and with his teammate Isack Hadjar also showing strong pace, the competition for the podium is going to be tight. With tire strategy expected to force two or even three pit stops, it’s giving a total tactical showdown.
Why it matters
This race is a pivot point for the 2026 championship. If Russell keeps this momentum, we’re looking at a wild finish to the season. It's a W for the fans as F1 tackles one of the most physically demanding tracks on the calendar.
