The Drama in Blacksburg

Pitt is officially 5-0, but they had to sweat every second of it. The Panthers scraped by with a 35-33 win over Virginia Tech on Friday night after a brutal missed 36-yard field goal by Hokies kicker John Love as time expired.

It was a chaotic scene at Lane Stadium. Virginia Tech was rolling, racking up 499 total yards to Pitt’s 295, but the Hokies handed the game to Pitt with a flurry of turnovers. Pitt quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer threw three, giving the Panthers the opening they needed to steal the W.

Narduzzi’s Receipts

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi did not hold back in his postgame interview. Clearly annoyed that his undefeated squad is being slept on, he told ESPN, "We've got a hell of a football team. Any of those voters out there, if they wake their ass up they might figure that out."

Real talk, the man has a point. Pitt is 2-0 in the ACC and is currently sitting on a perfect record, yet they’re barely registering in the AP poll.

Looking Ahead

The victory comes with a major "what if." Starting QB Mason Heintschel exited early in the third quarter with a knee injury and was seen on the sidelines on crutches. Backup Holden Geriner held it down, but Heintschel’s health is the main character energy the team needs to survive the next few weeks.

Pitt has a clear path to an ACC title shot. They’ve got North Carolina at home and a trip to Boston College next. If they survive those, they’re looking at a massive showdown against No. 4 Miami on Oct. 24. It’s giving classic underdog vibes, and if they keep winning, the AP voters won't have a choice but to pay attention.

Why it matters

At 5-0, Pitt is effectively the top threat to Miami in the ACC. If they keep this momentum, they aren't just flirting with the Top 25—they’re setting up a potential spot in the ACC Championship game. But with their starting QB’s injury status up in the air, the plot thickens.
