The money move
Elon Musk’s America PAC is back in the game and going hard on the midterms. According to a deep dive into FEC filings by WIRED, the super PAC has dropped $31 million on this year’s races—with a massive $24.8 million specifically targeting seven major US Senate battlegrounds. If you're wondering why Musk is playing so hard for the GOP, the answer is pretty simple: he’s looking to prevent a Democratic Senate majority that could potentially target him with investigations or aggressive AI and tech regulations.
The strategy: Lowkey aggressive
Real talk, the vibe of America PAC this time around is straight-up hostile. The group is spending way more on trashing Democrats than on boosting Republicans—the ratio is currently two-to-one for the House and three-to-one for the Senate.
In Texas, where Musk calls home, the PAC has funneled over $9.4 million into ads attacking Democratic candidate James Talarico, while only tossing $1.8 million toward Republican candidate and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Despite that financial muscle, polling still shows Talarico with a 6-point lead.
It’s a similar story in Ohio and Iowa. In Ohio, the PAC is spending double to attack Democrat Sherrod Brown compared to what it spends to defend incumbent Jon Husted. Meanwhile, in Iowa, they’re spending 14 times more to target Democrat Josh Turek than to support Republican Ashley Hinson.
Why it matters
If you're asking why you should care, it’s because the balance of power in the Senate could fundamentally change the regulatory environment for Musk’s companies, like Tesla and SpaceX. While the PAC spent huge amounts on presidential races in 2024, this current pivot to Senate races shows they’re playing the long game on legislative control. We don’t even know who is bankrolling the bulk of this recent surge yet—those donor details won't drop until October 15. For now, it's giving major "defensive weapon" energy, and the stakes for the next few years of tech oversight are highkey massive.
