The Stats

BMW is officially swinging back at the EV competition with the new iX4. It’s a coupe-shaped SUV based on their "Neue Klasse" platform, and the specs are looking pretty stacked. We’re talking a Gen6 battery with 112.2kWh of usable energy, an 800-volt architecture for insane charging speeds, and an EPA-estimated range of 428 miles. To put that in perspective, that’s officially clearing the Tesla Model Y. You’re looking at getting 184 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.

Under the Hood

The iX4 uses electrically excited synchronous motors (EESM) that ditch permanent magnets entirely, which BMW claims cuts down weight by 10% and energy loss by 40%. It’s definitely not slow, either. The 50 xDrive trim gives you 463 horsepower, hitting 0–60mph in 4.7 seconds. If you need more of a flex, the M60 xDrive pushes 603hp and drops that time by a full second. It’s also loaded with tech, like a massive 17.9-inch touchscreen and a "Panoramic iDrive" system that projects your widgets right onto the windshield.

The Real Talk

Ok, but why should you care? BMW is trying to build a fortress against the flood of affordable Chinese EVs currently changing the game in Europe. The starting price for the 50 xDrive is $66,200. While the range and build quality are absolute Ws, it’s unclear if that price point can actually compete with the aggressive affordability we're seeing elsewhere. Plus, while Tesla has FSD, BMW is sticking to "Symbiotic Drive," a Level 2 hands-free highway system. It’s giving luxury, but at a luxury price.

Why it matters

BMW is betting everything on the idea that if they offer enough variety—from the i3 sedan to the iX4 SUV—they can win over drivers who are tired of the limited options from companies like Tesla. They're prioritizing performance and range to justify the cost, but in a market where price is king, we'll have to wait and see if these specs are enough to keep the brand relevant against cheaper, high-tech rivals.
