What's the deal with castor oil packs?
If you've been scrolling your FYP lately, you’ve definitely seen them: castor oil packs. They’re the latest wellness flex, and lowkey, the vibes are off if you don’t know what you’re doing. To get the facts straight, we hit up Dr. Iris Kerin Orbuch, founder of the Iris Wings Sanctuary For Endometriosis Surgery & Wellness, to find out if this trend actually eats or if it's just another influencer fad.
The science behind the glow-up
According to Dr. Orbuch, the secret sauce is ricinoleic acid. It makes up nearly 90% of the oil’s fatty acid content. When you apply it topically, those anti-inflammatory properties can assist with digestive health by binding to smooth muscle receptors in your intestinal walls.
"Applying heat to castor oil can relax the smooth muscles of the uterus and may relieve menstrual cramps," Dr. Orbuch noted. It might also help with bloating and GI pain, and for those dealing with endometriosis, it can even help shift your nervous system into a "rest and digest" state.
How to get started (without making a mess)
Want to try it? You’ll need organic, hexane-free castor oil and some unbleached wool or cotton flannel. Here’s the play:
- Saturate your cloth with the oil.
- Place it on the desired area (the right side of your abdomen is recommended for liver detox).
- Layer a heating pad or hot water bottle on top.
- Kick back for 45 to 60 minutes.
Real talk: It’s a bit of a process and can be pretty messy, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. Also, Dr. Orbuch reminds us that if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have sensitive skin, this might be an L for you. Always chat with your doctor before switching up your routine.
Why it matters
Wellness trends come and go, but understanding the actual science helps you avoid the ones that are just hype. Whether you're trying to ease cramps or just curious about the trend, knowing how to do it safely is the ultimate move.
