Real talk: the crypto space just got hit with some majorly unhinged news. Seven men have been arrested by Toronto police in connection to the violent kidnapping of a cryptocurrency exchange owner.

The breakdown

The plot went down on July 25, 2026, when the victim was targeted near Finch Avenue East and Bayview Avenue in Toronto. According to police, the suspects held the victim at gunpoint, handcuffed him, and assaulted him in a desperate attempt to gain access to his crypto bags and security systems. After being threatened, the victim was eventually released, but the aftermath of this scheme is a total L for everyone involved.

Police have slapped the group with 82 charges, including kidnapping for ransom and a laundry list of firearms offenses.

The military connection

What makes this story hit different is that three of the seven suspects—Talarambage Fernando, James Moreau, and Jack Miley—are identified as members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The Department of National Defence confirmed that Fernando and Moreau were reservists with the 7th Toronto Regiment and have since been removed from duty.

During the investigation, police seized a scary amount of gear, including a shotgun, 3D-printed firearms, silencers, and GPS trackers. Even crazier: over 2,500 of the 2,700 rounds of ammunition found were identified as stolen directly from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Why it matters

This isn't the first time we’ve seen crypto owners become targets for kidnapping in Canada, but the level of sophistication and the military involvement is a massive red flag. The authorities are still working to figure out how this entire puzzle fits together, but they’ve made it clear: no one is above the law. Whether you're stacking digital assets or just minding your business, remember that security is everything—and always keep your hardware and personal info on lock. This is not financial advice, just a reminder to stay safe and keep your head on a swivel.
