Around 8 a.m., she was blindsided by an aggressive sea lion that knocked her straight into the ocean. Gray told KNTV it was a total nightmare, even noting that the creature actually grabbed her hair.
Fighting back
Gray was bitten on her arm, hand, and feet, and had to physically fight the animal off. Even after she managed to climb back onto her board, the sea lion didn't just dip—it followed her as she headed toward shore. A friend eventually rushed her to urgent care, where she had to get tetanus and rabies shots. Real talk: that is definitely not how you want to start your Monday.

This isn't just a random act of nature; experts suspect the vibes are off because of domoic acid poisoning. Marine Mammal Center researchers say this toxin, which comes from harmful algal blooms, is currently affecting sea lions and fur seals around Monterey Bay, often causing them to act super unpredictable. There was even a second sea lion attack reported on a surfer in the same area on Tuesday.
While officials are urging everyone to stay at least 150 feet away from marine animals right now, Gray says she’s not swearing off the water forever. She’s just waiting for the red tide and the toxic bloom to clear up before she goes back. For now, maybe stick to the beach instead of hitting the waves.
