College football is officially in its chaos era. For the second week in a row, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation has been taken down by an unranked underdog. This time, it was Auburn pulling the upset over Georgia in a 27-24 thriller on Saturday.

The winning moment

With the clock ticking down, Auburn’s Alex McPherson drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired to seal the deal. The victory was set up after a wild sequence of events, including a clutch fumble recovery by Auburn safety Sylvester Smith-Reed with under a minute left. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, who struggled with two interceptions and a costly fumble, couldn't overcome a late roughing-the-passer penalty from teammate Gabe Harris Jr. that put the Tigers in prime position.

Auburn’s ground game ate

Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown absolutely went off, racking up 115 yards and a TD on 26 carries, while also tossing a touchdown pass. Auburn dominated the trenches, outrushing the Bulldogs 192-113. It’s giving total lockdown energy; after falling behind 14-0 early, the Tigers ripped off 24 unanswered points to completely change the momentum of the game.

A historic collapse

This loss is a massive L for Georgia. Not only does it end their one-week reign at the top of the AP Top 25, but it also snaps their nine-game winning streak over Auburn and a massive 53-game win streak against unranked opponents. Georgia coach Kirby Smart didn't mince words after the game, admitting, “We helped them. We had three turnovers and critical penalties.”

Why it matters

This result is historic. According to Sportradar, this is the first time since October 1990 that the team ranked No. 1 has lost in back-to-back weeks—following Texas’s loss to Oklahoma last Saturday. The top-ranked teams had been sitting on a 93-game home winning streak against unranked opponents since 2007, but that streak is officially dead. Real talk, the rankings are about to look very different next week.
